ABOUT THE PROJECT
Karmakar’s exhibit "The Influence of Influence" presents two facets of his cinematographic work: a double feature of documentaries from the beginning of his career, "Sam Shaw on John Cassavetes" (1990) and "Hellman Rider" (1988), and a variety of clips filmed during his time at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University (2012-2013). The early documentaries explore the nature of artistic inspiration through conversations with influental figures of Amercian film and Hollywood, the photographer and producer Sam Shaw and the director Monte Hellman. Alongside these documentaries, a new clip will be presented each day of the exhibit as part of a running "19 Clips for 19 Days" series. Together, Karmakar’s early works and recent takes examine the continuing “influence of influence” and the people and places from which these inspirations are drawn.
